With social media having become such a powerful tool in contemporary times, it is not surprising that big, world renowned enterprises are using it as a means to promote their business. Many companies which did not have much of an Online presence till about half-a-decade ago, are now using social media for their primary marketing strategy. Some companies who are now making extensive use of public social platforms for growth and development are mentioned below.

Old Spice – This male toiletries brand launched an extremely popular Response Campaign in 2010. It first released a video on Youtube entitled ‘The Man Your Man Could Smell Like’ followed by numerous videos of the Brand’s interaction with it’s fans. The success this campaign achieved was phenomenal and not only brought back Old Spice into mainstream competition, but also won over much attention from business analysts.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines – KLM has been using two popular Online Social Networks – namely Facebook and Twitter to provide efficient customer service. They entertain and answer customer queries, and respond to complaints and suggestions via these two forums, promising service within an hour. Thus, KLM is available for contact to its customers all 24 hours throughout the week.

Dell – This popular IT Corporation is known to be one of the pioneers in online marketing. It began using Facebook and Twitter as a means for providing customer support, obtaining service reviews and publishing information and updates. To add to this, it launched its Social Media Listening Command Center in late 2010, which monitors Dell-related topic posts at an average of 22,000 a day.

Unisys – This Tech-giant uses social media to maintain internal collaborative networks. Unisys has it’s ‘My Site’ which allows its employees to build their credentials, interact and collaborate with Unisys employees from across the world and share expertise. This effort by Unisys, reflects an attempt at enabling better communication and interaction within their team itself, before externalizing this objective.

ABC – This Broadcasting Corporation has begun using social media to engage more viewers for its TV shows. A case is point would be ‘PanAm’, whose publicity was done through Facebook and Twitter. In fact, there were opportunities offered allowing viewers to win exclusive ‘PanAm’ merchandise through online contests.
