Say Goodbye to Designer’s Block

Every designer, at some point in time, feels devoid of their creative juices. There are moments of frustration when no idea seems to materialize and those that do seem inadequate or lacking. And if one is on a deadline, this designer’s block is all the more exasperating. However, there are a few simple exercises that can help one get over this impediment to their creativity.

Relax and Rejuvenate

A small break from continuous unfruitful work is the first step that can help one revive their mind. The break should be spent doing something one enjoys immensely be it listening to music, watching television, going for a walk or something else.  It should just prevent them from again pondering over their work issues.

Inspire Yourself

Sometimes, reviewing one’s own best work (that done in the past), is very helpful in overcoming the designer’s block. It may give one some new ideas, but more importantly, provides them with inspiration to produce new, fine output.

Be Organized

When resuming work after the break, one must keep themselves organized. Even if one’s not intuitively very orderly, it is best that they gather all their working paraphernalia in one place, with everything kept properly in close proximity for easier access. Organized surroundings breed healthy thought process.

Reverse Rev

A creative block is often an outcome of temporary stagnation of one’s thinking and idea. To provide stimulation, one must confront their brain with the unexpected. One should reverse the usual course of their action. For instance, if one a task by first creating a design and then adding content, they should reverse this process. Similarly if one begins by doing a pen outline then fill it with color, they should try the other way round. Giving the brain a reverse rev may get it working again.

Follow Through

When one is going through a designer’s block, they are most susceptible to abandoning their efforts quickly. However, it is a must to follow through with whatever one has started even if they think halfway that it is not up to the mark. For all they know, it may turn to be brilliant in the end, or be different from their expectations, thus giving rise to new and better ideas.
